A glazed roof is a fully glazed structure built into or on top of a flat or low pitch roof, designed to bring natural light into the space below. Unlike a standard window or skylight, a glazed roof covers a significant portion of the ceiling area, transforming how a room feels throughout the day.

Glazed roofs split into two distinct categories. Each suits different applications, aesthetics, and roof structures.
A lantern roof rises above the main roof line. It sits on top of a flat roof and creates a raised glazed structure that pulls light in from all four sides as well as from above. From outside, it looks like a glass box sitting on the roof. From inside, it creates a bright, airy ceiling with a view of the sky.
Lantern roofs come in two styles: traditional and contemporary. A traditional lantern uses multiple panes divided by visible glazing bars, which suits period properties and extensions with character. A contemporary lantern uses fewer, larger panes and a slimmer frame profile for a more minimal finish.
A flat rooflight sits flush or near-flush with the roof surface. It does not rise above the roof line in the way a lantern does, which gives a cleaner external appearance. From inside, the effect is similar to a lantern roof in terms of light, but the visual character is different. Flat rooflights suit very modern architecture particularly well.
We find that homeowners with contemporary new builds or clean-lined extensions tend to choose flat rooflights, while those with older properties or more traditional extensions lean toward a lantern roof. Both are valid choices and the decision ultimately comes down to the look you want to achieve and the roof structure you are working with.

The S1 Lantern uses a 50mm slim rafter profile. The top caps sit just 8mm above the external glass. This means less visible frame and more sky from every angle. The internal ceiling line is clean and uncluttered, which is something we hear customers comment on consistently after installation.
Thermal performance is where the S1 Lantern genuinely stands out. Titan uses Thermolock technology across all profiles. This is a multi-chamber thermal break system that outperforms traditional polyamide systems used in older and lower-specification lantern roofs.
The result is an overall U-value of 1.0 W/m2k for the complete roof unit. That is a strong figure for a lantern roof and it means the space below stays warm in winter without excessive heating costs. The system uses 28mm glazing with argon fill and a warm edge spacer bar as standard.
The S1 Lantern features a patent-pending glass lock system with integral gaskets and high-performance glazing tape throughout. All fixings are internal, which means there are no external access points for forced entry. Anti-tamper security screws add a further layer of protection, and overlapping cast end caps prevent removal of the top caps from outside.
In our experience, customers do not always think about glazed roof security until we raise it. A lantern roof over a kitchen extension is an access point, and specifying a system with a credible security setup is worth doing properly rather than as an afterthought.
The S1 Lantern is snow load tested to 1.2KN/m2, which covers all UK locations up to 200 metres altitude. For properties in higher or more exposed locations across Gloucestershire and the wider region, this structural reassurance matters. We always discuss this with clients on projects in elevated or rural settings.
An opening vent option is available on the S1 Lantern in the form of the Titan SheerVent. This integrates flush with the lantern profile so it does not disrupt the slim, clean appearance of the roof. Electric actuation with soft start and soft close is standard, and optional remote control and wireless rain sensor are available.
For south-facing extensions that can become warm in summer, a SheerVent makes a genuine difference to how comfortable the room is year-round. We fit these regularly on kitchen extensions across Cheltenham, Cirencester, and Stroud.
The S1 Lantern has LED light strip channels built into the eaves beam and ridge. This allows LED strip lighting to sit cleanly inside the lantern structure without any visible surface-mounted fittings. The effect at night is striking and it is a detail that photographs particularly well in finished interiors.
The Titan EDGE is Bifold Shop’s flat rooflight option. It delivers a completely different visual character to the S1 Lantern while maintaining the same quality of thermal performance and build.
The EDGE features edge-to-edge glass with no protruding frames and no perimeter sealants. It sits just 63mm above the roof upstand, which creates a near-flush finish that lets the glass dominate rather than the frame. All fixings are internal, consistent with the security approach across the Titan range.
The thermally broken aluminium frame achieves an overall U-value of 1.3 W/m2k. Heat soaked toughened glass and solar reflective glazing come as standard. The EDGE is available in 7 stock sizes, which covers the majority of residential openings without a custom order lead time. An opening version is also available for those who need ventilation.
In our experience, the Titan EDGE flat rooflight works better than a lantern roof for rooms where ceiling height is a constraint, because the flush profile does not reduce headroom in the way a raised lantern structure can. For basement extensions and rooms with lower ceiling heights, the EDGE is almost always the right call.
Both the Titan S1 Lantern and the EDGE flat rooflight are available in a range of RAL colours. Matching the glazed roof to the frame colour of adjacent bifold doors or patio doors creates a coordinated, considered finish across the whole project.
Anthracite grey remains the most popular choice across our installations. Black suits more contemporary builds where a bold contrast is the intention. White works well on traditional properties where a lighter profile suits the building better.

Most glazed roofs on single storey rear extensions fall within permitted development rights in England and do not require planning permission. However, this depends on your local authority, the size of the extension, and whether you live in a conservation area or own a listed building.
