What are the Alternatives to Bifold Doors?

new-bifold-doors

Bifold doors have won the hearts of many homeowners across the UK with their beautiful design and space saving qualities. Their ability to open up rooms and create a seamless transition between outdoor and indoor areas has made them a top choice for modern interiors.

Why Choose Bifold Doors?

Where do we begin? There are many reasons why homeowners and property developers choose to invest in bifold doors, for example:

  • Natural Light – With expansive glass panels, bi-fold doors can flood your interior spaces with natural light, making rooms feel brighter and larger.
  • Space Efficiency – Designed to fold and stack neatly to one side, these doors take up minimal space when opened. Unlike traditional hinged doors, which require a wide arc to open, they are perfect for areas where space is at a premium.
  • Modern Design – Bifold doors have a sleek, modern design that’s increasingly popular. We also offer various configurations to suit any home style, from compact two panel doors to expansive multi-panel systems.
  • Energy Efficiency – Modern bifold doors are designed with energy efficiency in mind. Many come equipped with double glazing, helping to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature while reducing heat loss. This can lead to lower energy bills and a more sustainable home.
  • Property Value – Installing bifold doors can significantly improve the appeal and value of your property. Their sleek, modern design and practical benefits make them a sought-after feature for potential buyers, potentially increasing your home’s market value.

Are Bifold Doors Out of Fashion?

Bifold doors continue to be a stylish and popular choice for many homeowners. Despite their many benefits, however, bifold doors might not always be the perfect fit for every space.

The good news is that there are various configurations of glazed doors available, each built to meet different spatial requirements and design preferences. In this article, we’ll explore some of the options to find you a bifold door alternative that still offers that modern style.

Sliding Glass Doors

Our glass sliding doors consist of multiple panels that glide open and fold to one side, creating a wide, uninterrupted opening much like our traditional bifold doors. These doors are an excellent choice for connecting indoor spaces with outdoor areas, such as patios or gardens.

Pros

  • Natural Light – The large glass panels allow plenty of natural light to flood your space, brightening up the interior and creating an airy space.
  • Space Efficiency – Unlike traditional hinged doors, sliding glass patio doors don’t require additional space to open.
  • Connection to Nature – The glass panels are also ideal for bringing the outdoors in and connecting your living space with the many benefits of nature.
  • Versatility – At Bifold Shop, we offer these doors to fit a range of openings, from small doorways to large expanses.
  • Sightlines – Sliding doors have the slimmest sightlines of any glazed product, with no need for large, chunky aluminium frames obscuring the view! Sightlines for sliding doors can go down to just 20mm.

Cons

  • Costs – Sliding glass doors have a premium finish, complex design and use high quality materials. For this reason, they may be more expensive.
  • Security Concerns – Large glass panels can potentially be more vulnerable to break-ins, which is why we use safety toughened glass within our systems. You should also invest in high quality, secure locking mechanisms.

French Doors

Bifold Door Locks

Glass French doors are a classic and elegant option, characterised by their double-door design with glass panels extending the full length of each door. Typically hinged on the sides, these doors can open either inward or outward. Their symmetrical design makes them a perfect choice for creating an elegant entrance or exit between rooms.

Pros

  • Interior Design – French doors are the epitome of timeless charm, making them an excellent choice for many period properties.
  • Natural Light – These doors also allow for plenty of natural light to flow between rooms or from the outside.
  • Customisation – We offer French glass doors in various styles and finishes, allowing you to match them with your home’s décor – whether that’s a traditional design or a contemporary finish. We offer these with a maximum frame width of 2400mm.

Cons

  • Space Requirements – French doors require space to swing open, which may not be ideal for smaller rooms or areas where space is limited.
  • Cost – Depending on the materials, design and any customisations you may require, French doors can be a dearer investment. The premium quality and timeless appeal they offer, however, can make them well worth the cost.

Single Doors

A single glass door is the most simplistic door design, consisting of a single panel that swings on hinges that are typically mounted on one side. These doors are incredibly versatile and can be used for both interior and exterior applications.

Pros

  • Cost – Due to the simplicity of their design, single doors are generally more affordable. They offer excellent value for those looking to update their space without a significant investment.
  • Space Efficiency – In smaller spaces, single doors take up less wall space than larger door configurations such as double bifold doors.
  • Simplicity – Single doors are simple in design and highly versatile, making them suitable for virtually any room or entrance.

Cons

  • Limited Opening Width – One of the main considerations with a single door is its limited width. Unlike bifold doors, single doors only provide a standard opening, which may not be sufficient for larger spaces or areas where a wider opening is required.
  • Design Limitations – While single doors are versatile, they may not provide the same level of visual impact as the more complex door systems we offer.

Folding Patio Doors

Folding patio doors are designed to create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. They consist of multiple panels that fold and stack neatly to one side, opening up an entire wall to the outside. They are an excellent choice for patios, decks or garden areas.

Pros

  • Uninterrupted Views – Folding patio doors can open up an entire wall, providing an expansive and unobstructed view of the outdoors.
  • Natural Light – Like many of the alternative options, these doors also let in plenty of natural light to brighten your interior spaces even when the doors are closed.
  • Customisation – At Bifold Shop, we offer customisable configurations to suit different spaces and design preferences. Whether you need a few panels of a multi-panel system, speak to our experts to see how these doors can be tailored to meet your needs.

Cons

  • Space for Stacking – Whilst patio folding doors maximise the opening, they do require space for the panels to stack when fully opened. This may be a consideration in smaller areas or where wall room is limited.
  • Maintenance – The multiple panels, tracks and hinges can require regular maintenance to ensure a smooth operation. Keeping these in good working order is essential to ensure they perform for years to come.

Bifold Windows

Have you considered bifold windows? Using the same principles as our bifold doors, they feature multiple glass panels that fold neatly to one side. These windows are an excellent choice in kitchens, living rooms, cafes and other entertainment spaces.

Pros

  • Indoor/Outdoor Flow – These windows are perfect for connecting the outside world with the inside. For example, they’re ideal for kitchens or bars where serving food and drinks directly to an outdoor space can make entertaining more convenient and enjoyable.
  • Versatile – Available in various sizes, finishes and materials, bifold windows can be customised to suit different interior schemes.
  • Unobstructed Views – Bifold windows can open up entire wall space, providing a completely unobstructed view of the outdoors – a nice feature for commercial spaces when the summer starts to feel that little bit hotter!

Cons

  • Cost – Due to their complex design and high quality materials, bifolding windows are more expensive than standard window options. With a premium finish, we’d argue this initial investment is worth it!
  • Security – Whilst our bifold windows are designed with security in mind, large glass panels can be perceived as more vulnerable to break-ins. That’s why we build our systems with safety toughened glass and recommend that you opt for an advanced locking system.
